George Dritsas a former industrialist of the coffee sector whose company was destroyed by the Greek coffee oligopoly dominated by the multinational NESTLE and Secretary General of STOPCARTEL Antitrust NGO,left his last breath last week as his body buckled under the pressure and the anxiety caused by the attacks of his powerfull opponents for over a decade.
George
Dritsas was the man who revealed the illegal abuse of the dominant
position of the multinational NESTLE within the Greek coffee
market. The Greek Competition Commission systematicaly was not taking
into account his repeated complaints for many years despite his
protests.
It
has been necessary for him to enter secretly within the Greek
Parliament during a transparency committee session and require from
its members to get a decision to order an investigation of his
complaints by the Greek Competition Commission.NESTLE,under the
overwhelming evidence existed, was found guilty for abuse of its
dominant position and was fined with a fine of 30 milion
euros.George Dritsas was also the man who brought to trial two months
ago the former president of the Greek Competition Commission Spyros
Zisimopoulos who was found guilty for illegal practices concerning
NESTLE case.Spyros Zisimopoulos was sentenced by the court with 10
months inprisonment.
This
case is a classic case of Greek corruption,as has been concrete
evidence of the role the Greek Competition Commission plays over the
years in this country, protecting the interests of the big
companies.
The Greek
Antitrust movement payed
honor to the memory of George Dritsas for
his antitrust battles.Members of STOPCARTEL Board of directors residing in Greece and other members of the Greek Antitrust movement as lawyers, economists and businessmen have been present in his funeral.
