Austerity sends Greek economy into depression
The austerity measures that were supposed to fix Greece's problems are dragging down the country's economy. Stores are closing, tax revenues are falling and unemployment has hit an unbelievable 70 percent in some places. Frustrated workers are threatening to strike back.
Under the shadow of the austerity measures of the I M F ,a Greek Mayor defends the local authority boundaries of his Municipality, which the Greek government illegally changes. A huge ecological blow to Athens.

The famous throughout Greece for his democratic struggles Mayor of the City of Hellinikon Christos Kortzidis, today completed 57 days of hunger strike. Municipality of Hellinikon,a southern suburb of the Greek capital, which owns the site of the former Athens International Airport, sees its local authority boundaries to be modified by an arbitrary and illegal decision of the Greek government under the program called "Kallikrates", dictated by the austerity measures imposed to the country by the International Monetary Fund.

The results of this violent change, if implemented, will forever change the lives of the inhabitants of the Greek capital and that city, and would legitimize the illegal occupation of hundreds of acres beach land belongs to the Municipality from private companies that have been tolerated by the Greek Governments for years ,thanks to the corruption regime afflicting the country.
Converting a large part of the former Athens International airport and the beach in residential and commercial areas will destroy the dream of the people of Athens for decades visualizing the creation of a big metropolitan park in the ecologically impaired and overcrowded Greek capital.

Barrier to such projects is the Municipality of Hellinikon whose the consent was never obtained when the government decided to abolish its local authority boundaries.An elimination which is illegal under the European Charter of Local Self-Government, that demands consent in these cases.

The Greek government, within the context of the overall deficit of democratic rules that is existing in the country since the military dictatorship of 1967, a fact that is unknown in the outside world , has refused to sign and implement during 1985 the Article 5 of the European Charter of Local Self-Government that requires consensus to change the local boundaries of municipalities..
